Found a 16" M1905 bayonet...
I bought an old house last month and I've been doing drywall and cleaning it out. Anyway in the garage there was a homemade tool cabinet still full of tools and junk. I noticed lots of thinks tucked inside corners and hanging inside the front frame that the doors attach to, and I see what looked like a big knife. I pull it out and its a big long old bayonet. Its all rusted and doesn't have a handle. Just the metal part of the scabbard is left. I put some CLP on it and whiped it down. I get to looking and measuring. It fit right on my M1 Garand. Looks mean scarry too. The blad measures 16 inches. So I google, turns out its an M1905. The serial number is in big numbers 907 under the US and the opposite side has RIA with the ordnance stamp and 1906 under it. There is some pitting toward the end, and its obvious someone has spray painted it black.
What should I do with it. Its obviously not any type of collector grade. Should I have it polished or bead blasted and parkerized? Maybe try and find a new handle or have one made?

To make the pitting blend in so it won't be as obvious either bead or better yet sandblast it. You can leave it in that condition as long as you keep it oiled. I have no idea on the availability of either original or repo scales. 0 -
Check fleabay. They show up from time to time (wood and plastic). 0 -
leeblackman....the 1905's are cool bayonets IMHO. I think the sandblast idea is a good one, then just keep it oil as mentioned and you should be ok. As to grips, I have seen them from time to time in Shotgun News ads. I would look around for a real scabbard and they do come up from time to time on EB. When done, you should have a nice bayonet and one that gets attention. Good luck on your project[:D][:)] 0
