Winchester 94 .32 year made & correct butt plate??
Hello All Again
I have added serial number of rifle below.
I recently bought a Winchester 94 lever action .32 special. According to the serial number it was made in 1940. I has been well taken care of. But the original butt plate has been removed and missing. A Western Feild recoil pad has been added. I would like to replace the recoil pad with an orignal butt plate again.
My question is what would be the correct butt plate for a Winchester 94 .32 special made in 1940? I have done some checking and they made both metal and plastic. The metal butt plate seems to be the one that was original. But I have heard they made 2 different metal types butt plates. So to try and get the correct butt plate I would like any help I can get.
I AM PUTTING IN THE SERIAL NUMBER TO HELP WITH FINDING THE CORRECT YEAR THE RIFLE WAS MADE AND ALSO THE CORRECT BUTT PLATE NEEDED TO REPLACE THE RECOIL PAD CURRENTLY ON THE RIFLE. THE SERIAL NUMBER IS 11671XX. THANKS.
If any of you could please give me some feedback on what is the correct butt plate. Also any information on one that is for sale that would be the correct one.
Thanks,
Gary

I don't know when it was made, but for what it's worth my 94/.32 Special, saddle ring, carries a number of 925,146 and has a smooth metal butt plate.
There are some real Winchester pros in these parts, and I'm sure you'll be hearing more shortly.
And, welcome to the Forum![:D]0 -
Please post your serial number so we can verify the manufacture date. If you got the date from Madis or on the internet, it's most likely wrong.
This thread will help you or you can wait for Bert H. but we need the full number: http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=245213
According to Bert, there was a transition period in 1937 from the straight, serrated steel buttplate to the later checkered steel buttplate. Your serial number will help to determine which buttplate is correct for your carbine and the correct date of manufacture.0 -
The Model 1894/94 butt plate chronology is as follows;
1. From November 1st 1894 to late 1936 the traditional curved inletted steel (rollover) butt plate was used as standard. From September 1936 through June 1937 (serial number range 1115300 - 1129000) there was an intermix of the old style butt plate with the serrated steel butt plate (the same type used on the Model 55 lever-action). A shotgun style black hard rubber butt plate was a special order option.
2. Starting in late 1936 the serrated steel butt plate began to appear, and by June of 1937 it had completely replaced the old style Carbine butt plate. It was used exclusively until December 1945, when the flat checkered steel butt plate first began to appear. There was an intermix of the two types until early 1946 (serial number range 1350000 - 1366700). A shotgun style black hard rubber butt plate was a special order option.
3. From 1946 through the end of the collectable era (pre-1964), the flat checkered steel butt plate was used.0 -

Gary,
If the serial number on your Model 94 is less than 1352067, I can provide you with the exact date that it was serialized.0 -

If memory serves me correct, the smooth metal butt plate also came with the Whelan stock which would have flutes. Such a combination would have been special order...again, as I recall.0 -
Kimi,
Now you have me wondering. What makes a Whelan stock a Whelan?
I hadn't noticed before, but the stock does have the flutes at the forward edge of the comb. Is this what you're referring to?
Thanks,
Rob
Thanks for the clarification, Kiwi. Actually I have an original copy of one the Colonel's books and grew up in home where he was well known and revered. Just never heard his name attached to a stock like that.0 -

Colonel Townsend Whelan. Check him out on google. I don't have any of my books available to me that would help you there. Like I said, I'm quite sure that your Winchester would be special order because of such a combination. Bert or Old-Colts should have their reference books available to help you on this issue though. I've personally witnessed at least two or three carbines with the smooth steel shotgun butt plates, and all of them were on Whelan stocks.
Added: Yes, Rob, that's what I'm talking about.0 -

As Bert stated above, he can give you the exact month, day and year of your Winchester's manufacture but he needs the complete serial number without the "xx".
There's no need to be concerned about posting the complete number as you'll see dozens of serial numbers and pictures of them in the survey thread http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=325084.0 -
Serial 11671xx was manufactured in early March of 1938. As such, it should have the serrated steel butt plate that looks like this...

Rob,
Your Model 94 was serialized on November 29th, 1920. The smooth steel butt plate is relatively common in the 900,000 serial number range. The picture below is serial number 951358. The second picture is a fluted comb (Whelen) style butt stock.
