    Got this off the net. Of course this is for the original production SM's from Colt, not the ones they started knocking out in the late 70's.

    The "reissue" ACE in the 1970s also had a SM serial number prefix.
    Usually.
    Mine is numbered 70B like a .45 and is not the only one.
    I have seen reliable reports that they also sold some .45s with SM numbers. The frames are mechanically the same and apparently they were not real careful about which caliber they put on what number format frame.
