How do you gauge an M-1 Barrel without a gauge? I have read to use a bullet, but exactly how far in or what exactly am I looking for it to do to tell how it measures? Thanks for any help

More importantly, visually check for a bulge in the bore. Then, if it has a Blue Sky import stamp, be sure that the stamp didn't flatten the barrel.

A "poor man's" muzzle wear gauge is a single round of USGI M2 .30-06 ball ammo. Insert it point first in the muzzle & measure how much copper jacket is showing: 1/4" or more=new, 1/8"= moderate wear, 0=substantial wear but still good enough for 100 yd plinking. If the case will enter the bore, it is worn out.

The post I had seen for an M-1 Carbine said not to use a 30-06 bullet, but this is the way?

    It's a 30cal. bore [;)]

I carry a 30cal. boat tail bullet and put the base in the bore. If it just goes to the edge, bore is like new. If it goes more, there is wear depending how far it is.

There was a great post on this about a month ago and I could not find it last night. The basic idea is that if you put a M2 ball 3006 cartridge bullet into the end of the barrel and there is one quarter of an inch showing between the case mouth and the bore of the rifle you have a very low ME, as the bullet moves down into the bore the more ME you have and at the case mouth the barrel is shot out. All is not lost if you have a shoot out barrel you can have the barrel counter bored and recover the accuracy of the rifle.
