Winchester 1873
I have found a 1873 22short, however, it
can be converted to shoot longs with the
movement of a bullet stop located on the side
of the block.
The gun operates well, the finish is better
than 50% and the wood is ok.
Is this gun really rare? What is it worth?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hello
I inhereted a Winchester 1873. Unfortunately, it had a sawed off magazine tube. I have been fortunate enought to find a replacement magazine tube (at a small fortune). Now I need the piece that connects the tube to the barrel (near the front site). Can anyone tell me what this piece is called and where i might get one?
Thanks

Hello Juan,
Yes, it can easily converted (adjusted) to shoot 22 Long (not Long Rifle) cartridges, and there is no problem in doing so, as it can just as easily be adjusted back to shoot 22 Short catridges. That said, I would personally leave it set for 22 Short. It is much easier to find 22 Short ammo.
I personally do not consider the Model 1873 .22 caliber rimfire rifles to be "rare"... instead, they are simply uncommon. Winchester manufactured them for nearly 15-years, with a total production of approximately 19,500 rifles.
I too would like to see pictutures of the rifle before passing judgement on the value, but as a rough estimate (in the condition you describe), it is likely to be worth a minumum of $2500.0
