Looking for a Kar 98
Hello all,
I'm a newbie, I'd like to purchase a nice Kar 98, and M1 Carbine. The Kar 98 is 1st on my list.
Would a Kar 98 expert please look at these 4 GB listing and provide me with their recommendations? Some listing may have expired but are relisted. I'd pefer not to pay more than $700, less is fine if you find a winner. Is it possible to find one with the marks still clear and not punched out?
Thank you in advance,
Peter

Stay away from 98 K's that have been refinished or are recent East European imports. Save your money and get the best original condition all matching one that you can afford.
There are many excellent sites and forums on the net that have Mauser rifle enthusiasts, also excellent reference books like Ball's "Mauser Military Rifles of the World". Get as much hands on experience with different Mausers as you can by going to various Gun Shows, and befriending collectors.0 -
pkvoss.....thanks for your questions and welcome to the GB Forum. And congrats in wanting to start your collection with a 98k![^] Rufe has given you some good advice on doing some research on 98k's before you start your quest so as not to make a mistake. Just know that 98k's are almost an art form and take on a life of their own! As to your question, all the Mausers listed have "issues" as most are recent imports from Eastern European countries, usually Ukraine or Russia. These weapons were "dropped" or captured by the "Allies" and refurbished in their armories and resold on the market. Many have seen better days. The good news is that in this down market a lot of folks are parting with their older Mausers that they got in the 50's and 60's that are in much better shape, numbers match, and have been in guns racks for years. I would look for one of those but you will pay a bit more for one but if you have a sharp eye and are prepared to wait, you should do well. Remember that "luck favors the prepared mind." Visit some gun shows, go to some gun shops, look in the local paper, perhaps get a copy of Law's "Backbone of the Wehrmacht, The German 98k Rifle, 1934-1945)" and/or "Lud" Olsen's "Mauser Bolt Rifle" along with Ball's already mentioned Mauser book, study them all, and you should be ready for the market. Good luck on your quest[:)][^]...Mausers are a lot of fun and a hoot to shoot[:)] 0 -

Well, if you want the gun to appreciate as a collector, then this is good advice, and I agree with it.
If you just want a "beater" Mauser to shoot, for display, or re-enactment, the re-finished/re-assembled "capture" guns (at under $300) should function fine in that role.
To answer the other question, its absolutely possible to find guns with the original proof marks that haven't been peened out. Just expect to look a bit harder and pay a bit more for them.0 -
Try a persian mauser. I've got one, they are excellent shooters. You can get them practically brand new and in your price range. There are a few on the auction side. 0 -
Check your e-mail...and consider a 96 action Swede...hard to go wrong with them! 0 -
Thank you every one for your great info! I've been reading as much as I can on the web, my cousin is a gun collector in Austria, and he will keep his eyes open for me.
I'm planing on going to the Lake County, IL gun show this weekend. Maybe I will see some K98s!
I found some nice websites in my search.

I got a little antsy and purchased a M1 carbine, IBM made the other day. Being and IBM'er, I wanted a IBM made M1.
