Gun Safe Installation
Hope this is not posted in the wrong place. [:I] I bought a 2340 lb. Graffunder gun safe to be delivered later this week. The install will be in a very large closet that currently has carpet as does the room. I may in a year or so put hardwood floors in this room and closet. Would it be better to leave the carpet under the safe, to be there forever more, or to take it out now and just install on the concrete? Probably seems like a dumba$$ question, but moving this monster later on would be a chore..[xx(]..any insight would be appreciated...Thanks

Is it going on a carpet over concrete or carpet over wood, if it is carpet over concrete i would remove it and put a slight lift so you have airflow under so moisture doesn't get trapped under your safe. 0 -
It's carpet on concrete right now, you're right about the air flow. 0 -
A one ton safe is heavy but you dont have to lift it. They are easily slid around once they are emptied. I would extend the wood floor under it incase you move or even just want to move the safe. 0 -
Putting the wood floor under it would be ideal, but it just fits in the hole where it's going. It'll be backed up against the wall, with 1/2" clearance on each side. Front faces back into the closet area, which is still quite large. The only part accessible without tearing out a wall is the 1/2" steel door. 0 -
Concrete is actually porous. Moisture from the ground under the concrete can wick up through the concrete, rusting out the bottom of your safe if directly on concrete. Plus, water leaks inside your house would have the same result.
If it were mine, I'd install hardwood flooring first, then move the safe in; that would be the cleanest way. If a water leak is even a remote possibility, I'd also put the safe on a wood/plastic pallet or just nail together a perimeter frame.

I think I get the picture now, you are going to recess the safe into the wall, right? It will be inside of a wall and the only thing exposed is the door? If that is the case, put under it what ever is easiest and safest so the safe doesnt transfer moisture.0 -
Thanks guys, I have a 72.5" tall safe, 76.5" of vertical space. I'm thinking tear out the carpet, install a double layer of treated 2/12's screwed together on top of the concrete. The safe is 27.5" deep, so that will leave 3.5" or so, of empty space under the front of the safe. When I do the hardwood floor I can slide it under the front of the safe for a more finished look. (It is a closet, but trying to make it look as good as possible.) 0 -
I have installed rubber hockey pucks under all my safes. This allows it to be up in the air, and the concrete anchor will still work. The hard rubber does not compress. 0 -
You could shim it up on cedar shakes and knock them out when the new floor is ready to go down. 0 -
That's a tough call.
The safe should be raised
up definately and I would think
the little above the thickness of what you
estimate the hardwood floor to be,
just so you don't create a "well"
and to facilitate movement
should you need to.0
