Scent control

There is a lawsuit going on now over this very issue. Overrated claim of the effectiveness of a scent product or scent prevention apparal product.

On the other issue, I used to go with some hunters on the east coast who would go vegetarian for a week before the hunt so they would not give off the scent of being a predator either through the scent of their skin or from other body functions.

I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but they always did fairly well.

Guys have been hunting deer, elk, moose, bear and bunnies for thousands of years wearing only man stink. And bringing home the meat. All that scent lock garbage is a way to separate you from your money.

I agree with He Dog. Remember when hunting camps smelled of mothballs and burned soup?

My opinion would be somewhere in the middle. I think every effort you put forth (i.e. camouflage clothing, specific soaps for clothing as well as your body, grunts, rattling horns, buck bomb & deer pee, face paint, etc.) will "improve" your potential in taking a quality deer. That said, I only use about half of the products I mentioned above, and still take quality deer.
If a person is an avid bow hunter, I do think that each item mentioned will improve your results, but some folks go to the complete extremes with these items. If you hunt mainly during modern gun season, you can hunt with your face towards the wind and achieve good results. Also, you will typically see the game a good distance from you, so a longer shot is very possible.
Of all the things that you can have in your "arsenal", I would suggest a quality camouflage suit to blend better with your surroundings. Other than that, I think it's up to you. The hunters of 100 years ago and beyond had to get closer, with less quality clothing and did well enough to survive. With all the crap that's on the market today, it should be easy enough to fill the freezer.

I know quite a few guys that go 30ft up a tree and chew and smoke the whole time they are in the tree. Get up high and you won't bother them. The deer that is, not the guys.

(Where's my soapbox? Oh, there it is!! Okay now.....)

I believe that hunting is a skill. Generally and for the most part a solitary skill, even though you may travel and camp together with others. All the other stuff are tools (and there are few required) of that skill.

Tools of the skill are good, truly functional boots, plain old rugged field gear (clothing, gloves, etc.), camo or not, suited for your enviornment, a good drab or camo rainsuit (inexpensive german military gortex is good) and a good weapon in absolute top condiition, regardless of its age. All the other stuff does not really improve knowledge, skill or the number or quality of animals you take, in my opinion.

Stuff like scent blocker and all these other highly-touted "hunting" items, in my opinion, amount to the same thing as NASCAR coffee cups, jackets, hats, pens, flashlights, etc. and they simply mimic the high school mentality of wearing the "in" brand of shoes or clothing or having the latest gadget. This stuff caters to the hunting camp social mentality and doesn't do one darn thing for improving your ability to take game. I believe the stuff sold to supposedly magically guarantee results with little or no effort on your part (like all things in life) is of no value. Most of these "guarnteed-to-take" items usually cost under $50.00 and wind up in a closet, drawer, duffel bag or in the trash. But, there's plenty of this junk costing $$-hundreds-$$, too.

The money spent on this worthless stuff is better spent on making extra principal payments on your mortgage or treating your family to dinner or a show, not trying to impress your hunting friends.

Hunting is a skill. Now give me my 399superduper++MMM+++ magnum so I can show my skill by shooting 63 miles at that deer that I can't possibly hit and he can't possibly out fox or see me. Because my skill doesn't let me see the one that is 100 feet away. Sorry guys, as a none hunter I don't see much skill in the hunting I see or hear about.

It is just thinning the heard, putting food on the table, and the enjoyment of the activity. All very good but not much in the way of skills.

mcaso.....by your comment its very evident that you do not hunt for if you ever gave it a try you would have a very different point of view.

In fact, in my opinion, there is so much "skill" involved in hunting that the two words hunting and skill are synnonomous

There is some good in it for the guys who hunt mature large Bucks, that have been around the block a couple times. As for filling the freezer...no there is not much use.

    mcaso,

I find your post, non representative of the purpose of this forum. I believe some of rethoric is uncalled for, especially as you are a non hunter, with little or no experience. It does not pay honor to the knowledgable hunter, who strives to promote this sport. This forum is definately not the place for it.

    Ga boy,

I tried a few of these products a number of years ago but I was unable to qualify the performance of any of them since I usually managed to harvest at least one deer no matter what products I was wearing or using.

I am not a 'scentologist' or whatever their field might be named but I have found little use for most of the products which claim improved chances of harvesting game animals.

I will admit to showering with unscented products, cutting way back on my meat intake, and I change clothes out in the corn crib where I hang my hunting clothes between excursions out to hunt. Other than that, it's just me and my rifle or bow. Simplicity and common sense usually pay off in bigger dividends.

    mcaso,

Your attempt to be clever is a failure since you obviously don't qualify as an expert on this topic. You might give hunting a try before making any more useless comments about it.

    Best.
