Can a winchester model 12 12 gauge 2 3/4" chamber be modified ( have chamber lenghtened) to shoot 3" shells
The reason i ask is i own a model 12 roit gun (watts commemorative edition[:D]) which is in like new condition. I would like to purchase a extra barrel/ mag, forearm which i see a lot of on ebay. I would like to have a spare duck gun realize the new set up will have to be fitted .What i really wanted was a 12 heavy duck
    thanks rp

rejected polish/finish by factory QA line inspector. it was sent back thru for another reblue at the factory before being assembled into a gun.

The "W" stamped Winchesters were all manufactured in 1939 - 1941, and it was not a QA rejected finish/polish that was sent back for rebluing. Instead, it was stamped on the frame after it was originally blued to verify that the bluing did not flake or pop off.

To explain a bit further, Winchester changed the bluing formula in 1939, and to avoid the same problems they experienced in the 1920s (the infamous flaked bluing guns), they devised a simple test to verify that the bluing would not flake off.

In my survey of the Model 94, I have found (80) of them with the "W" stamp. I have also surveyey at least (6) Model 97 shotguns with the "W" stamp on them.

    Thanks for the info everyone.

Two more questons on Models 12. Is there a simple way to determine if a ventilated rib is a milled rib? Any idea how many Skeet, 16 ga.,WS-1 guns were produced?

That someone was Pauline Muerrle, and her interviews with the old time Winchester employees (Danny Alberino in this case) as discussed in her book, "Winchester The Way It Really Was".
