I am looking at a nice old win. 52. ser #26800. It does not have a receiver sight, however there is a large dovetail in the receiver that is filled with a fitted piece that has one threaded hole on the left side. how does a receiver sight fit and what sight would work.? thanks

The original sight is a flip up peep sight that fits into the large dovetail. Reciever sights were made that also fitted into the large dovetai. There are better Winchester experts here than me. They should know more on this.

Lyman made an early version of their 48 sight that was made for the early 52's with the large dovetail slot on top of the receiver. It is the 48J version

That threaded side hole is for either a Vaver rear or a Marble-Goss rear sight. That is the sight base. Should be some markings on it. I know of a Marble-Goss rear now with no base.
Lyman, as mentioned, made their 48 with a dovetail mount for that rifle. If you locate a 48 make sure it comes with a wedge thats necessary for the sight to fit.
