This should shed some light...apparantly quite a famous Birmingham gunmaker. The inscription obviously refers to a British Irregular Cavalry unit.

*I think I sorta kicked over an ant hill on this one. Swinburn was known for contract guns from Birmingham sent to the Confederate forces during the American Civil War and I would have to note the possibility (in light of the Irregular Horse refference) that this was a cavalry sidearm as the Confederates were known for the use of shotguns in this role; kinda 'anything that comes to hand' in that way. Pictures would be a plus....actually a necessity if any connection to this role is to be established, or if you want any kind of actual appraisal done.
Look for a J.S. and an anchor symbol as adirect refference to Swinburn.
**OK...ahead of myself as ussual! Check this link
