Winchester 61 22 short, octagan; how ruined?
Pictures tell it all, in as found condition how much isn't this worth now?[:(]

Picked it up over the weekend, took a chance at $500.00, I know the .22 shorts with octagon barrel are very rare but don't know if I over paid or if I did OK or great considering the back yard scope mount holes. Any recommendations on who could fix something like this and would fixing the receiver make this thing more valuable as a collector. Or is it just "done". I saw a barrel on the action side sold for $505.00 so I figure I'm not much underwater if at all. any thoughts or recommendations appreciated.

Collector value is totally trashed...
HOWEVER... as a shooter, you may have paid a tad much but if you are happy...0 -
I know some people will[:(] but if it were mine I would TRY to find a model 61 with a nice receiver and "common round barrel in 22 Long Rifle" and maybe bad stock cut barrel etc. and then take this guns barrel and internal 22 short parts and make one rifle using the best parts from both rifles then you will either have one NICE rifle and one BEATER or even better sell the one with this receiver and rest of common /bad parts. YMMV. 0 -

too bad on the holes. but all is not lost. if you know a guy who is really good with a wire welder or similar, have the holes welded full. file off the weld sprue and polish. cold blue and polish with 0000 steel wool. Or have the gun re blued. have it rust blued. I redid a model 1906 this year that had 8 holes drilled in it. looks beautiful now.0 -
Perryshoot and swamp are right. I get tired of statements that 'collector value is ruined' because of some defect or of quality restoration. A 'fix' probably won't bring it back 100% but it certainly makes it better than it was. As collectors we would prefer NIB but a 70% piece is better than a 50% one. 0 -
It was somebody's gun from the late 30's that he paid $35 hard earned dollars for and used it as he liked. Now, 70 years later were disappointed. If it were mint you couldn't afford it. 0 -
I've picked up many similar rifles over the years; butchered enough that I could afford them and enjoy them. If you plan to turn it around I'd say clean it up and cut your losses. You will take a hit but any money put into it now will just deepen the hole. If you plan to keep it find 4 quality plug screws and enjoy. 0 -
Find the correct mounts and scope it up again. Bring it back to the way it was and shoot it. 0 -
