How many .270s are there?
Neighbor has a Winchester bolt gun with a "PO Ackley barrel marked ".270 mag". Would this be a .270 Weatherby?

Possible. Best thing to do is have a chamber cast made to be on the safe side. 0 -
270 Weatherby was introed in 1945 so could be,,,he had a 270 Ackley Improved but I would think that would be on the barrel..Interesting and sorry could not help...have had some Ackley barreled guns and they are quite nice shooters. Let us knowq what you can find out about the cast/ 0 -
Checked my P.O. Ackley books and a .270 Ackley magnum is listed along with others. Look at bolt face to see if belted mag case or 7mm mauser size. Chamber cast a very good idea. I have a 45-350 mag from P. O. that is not in the books. 0 -
slinger,
"How many .270s are there?"
In response to your original question:
270 Ackley Magnum
270 Ingram
270 JDJ
270 Gibbs
270 Redding
270 Titus Savage
270 Weatherby Magnum
270 Winchester
270 Winchester Ackley Impr.
270/257 Roberts
270-257 Roberts Ackley Improved
270/284 Winchester
270-264 Magnum
270/300 Weatherby Magnum
270-308
270-308 Winchester Impr.
270/338 Winchester Magnum
270 WSM
Obviously these are not all attributed to Ackley but it is known that his ego was such that he marked barrels a certain way without being exact or specific as with your case.
Follow the recommendation to cast the chamber to be sure which parent case was used for sure. It's a simple process for which Brownells provides good instructions.
If it turns out to be a .270 Ackley Magnum, Midway has Quality Cartridge brass for sale:
http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=284574
Or you can fireform your own cases after deriving the parent case.

I picked up a set of dies and case forming dies along with a bunch of reloads and brass for a 270 Ackley short mag in a box lot. Sold the dies and still have the reloads and brass, they were formed from 300 H&H brass and have no use for them if it turns out to be that. 0 -
6.8 SPC is also a .277, as is the .270 JDJ no. 2. 0 -
Thanks all mucho. In the Dom. Repub. right now. When I get back I'll pursue this with the neighbor. 47 Stude: I'm a life member of SDC. Just sayin'.[:)] 0 -
