Polishing a gun barrel?

Polishing the OUTSIDE of the barrel, or the inside?

Polishing the outside is largely cosmetic. Arguably a smoother outside should shed dirt or contamination better, though less surface area also means it won't cool quite as fast. I don't think either of these things make any real-world difference, though.

For many firearms applications, you do NOT want a shiny barrel since it can potentially reflect light that can give away your position to game or enemies, and cause glare that may interfere with your sight picture.

Polishing the INSIDE of a barrel might make a sort of sense, but presumably that's why you break in barrels, and you do that by simply shooting and cleaning them.

A polished barrel is a happy barrel on the inside.
