National Firearms Company or Marlin?
I have aquired a 12 ga pump Shotgun which is stamped National Firearms Co. on the barrel. Buttplate is also marked National. It is identical to a Marlin model 17 shotgun but is not marked Marlin on it anywhere. Was National Firearms a trade name for marlin?

Your gun is what is called or known as a "Trade Brand Name" shotgun. A "Trade Brand Name" shotgun is one that was made by a major maker for and sold by a wholesaler or retailer who chose the name to go on the gun. Guns with the name NATIONAL ARM CO were made by Crescent Fire Arms Company if a break open breech loader and (Yes) by Marlin Arms Company if a pump action shotgun. The guns were made for and sold by two companies, either the May Hardware Company of Washington D.C. or Moskowitz & Hurback of Philadelphia,PA. I'm not sure which model Marlin pump your gun is but Marlin has stated that these guns are very old and strongly recommends that they not be fired. 0
