Number of different versions of the Spencer. Because of this their would be a lot of variation in value. Flayderman has them priced between $2000 & $5000 in "antique" FINE condition.
It would be best if you could post quality photos for identification and valuation purposes.

If he's looking to unload it, and you are a prospective purchaser, and trusting in your ability to know if the gun metal and wood wasn't polished/refinished sometime in the distant past, the barrel length is original and the sights have not been replaced with non Spencer types...
...I'd say you are spot-on!!
