Factory .257 Ammo?????
I am gearing up for the upcoming whitetail rifle season and could use some feedback. I have always used the 117 grain remington load, but was thinking about maybe making a change to the Hornady 117 grain interlock soft point boat tail round. Any suggestions on either or any other effective deer hunting rounds for the "Bob"?

Premium bullets are not needed for deer, but I am partial to "Double Tap Ammunition" 110grn Accubond and their 100grn TTSX rounds. They aren't giving it away. [8D]
.257 Roberts, 110 Accubond @ 380 yards.

I use hornady Light Magnum, for the spire point bullets. They give me better accuracy than the Remington and Federal. I think Federal was the other round nosed factory load, it has been several years. 0 -

+1 on the Hornady ammunition. Especially the Light Mag. Although I'm not sure you can get it anymore.
As far as Remington ammo goes I have two words. Slow and inconsistent. Within decent ranges it kills well. But not at extended ranges.
Another one to consider is Federal Premium with the 120 Partitions. Consistent, but not loaded nearly as fast as it could go.0 -
And not to forget:
How does it perform in your rifle? I'm sure it's my rifle, and nothing inherent in the round, but more than any of my other rifles (Hornets, .338's and a dozen or so in between) my .257 is extremely fussy. It will shoot sub-MOA with the few loads it likes, and shotgun patterns with those it doesn't.[xx(]0 -
I spent a day at the range last week shooting both the Remington and Hornady rounds you mention in a Pre 64 Model 70 Bob. It liked the Hornaday much better than the Remington. 0 -
Sandwarrior, you are correct. Here is the replacemnt:

Glad I have a few boxes.[^]0 -
My 257 R doesn't like the Hornady light mag loads. The barrel just doesn't shoot 115-120 bullets well so I use 100's exclusively. My handloads using Speer and Sierra 100's are somewhat faster than the factory loads and work well on deer within the ranges that I use the 257 R. I usually keep it under 250 yards but it has made a 300 yard kill on a cripple that was escaping another hunter. If I want/need more power, I go to the 25/06 or 257 Wby or a larger caliber. 0 -
My 721 hates the light magnum load as well, 4" at 100 yds is average for this load. It likes the good old Federal Premium load with the 120 gr partition, 1.5". I'd suggest that even as expensive as ammo is, try a few different loads and see what works best for your gun. 0 -
Riomouse: Is your rifle really a 721 or is it a 722? I am not aware that Remington ever chambered the 721 in .257 Roberts. 0 -
Gent making initial inquiry did not tell us what rifle/action was his 257R. If it is a small ring like my 1891 Argentine 257R, then use of the so called + 257R ammo is not recommended due to potential pressure problems....not sure this applies to say a small ring 1895 Chile action. If it is a Large Ring Mauser, Remington, Ruger, Winchester and etc. rifle then no problem shooting the plus 257R factory ammo. 0
