1" scope tube vs. 30mm
what are the pros and cons of a 30mm scope vs a 1"? Or vice versa?

The 30mm is slightly better for admittance of light, and field of view. The cost is usually quite a bit higher, and there aren't as many scope rings available. 0 -
30 MM MAY have larger field of view and MAY be better in very low light condition. But the 30MM rings most likely put the centerline of the scope Higher off the butt stock and higher off the bore line of the barrel[:(]. 0 -

Understood but I plan to use for 300yds and under... Will it make a large difference at those distances? For comparison, I was previously using a 6-24x50 with a 1" tube that already required High rings for the objective to clear the barrel. Rings for that and the new scope are/will be Burris Signature Zee rings.0 -
midnightrunpaintballer, The 50mm objective lens would make the center of the scope tube higher than would the 30mm tube with a 42mm objective lens. I think the 1" tube scope would be satisfactory for most any purpose. 0 -
The big advantage of a 30mm over a 1" tube is that you now have more room {usually} to adjust for elevation and windage. Meaning 30mm has a bigger advantage in long range shooting. 0 -

That makes sense. But to put it into perspective, My previous scope was a Simmons White Tail Classic 6-24x50 with a 1"tube in High rings. The new scope is a Burris Black Diamond 8-32x50 with a 30mm tube in High rings. I understand that the new scope will sit further out of line from the bore than the previous setup but I'm wondering if at 300yds and under, will it make much of a difference? This new setup will be temporary (a couple of years maybe) until I build something new that will reach out further and then will move this scope to that rifle.0 -
The 30mm tube scope centerline would only be 2 1/2mm higher than the centerline of the 1" tube. What we are talking about is only about a tenth of an inch difference. The effect on trajectory would be minimal. The thing a person might notice with a higher mounted scope is the spot weld (cheek contact with the stock) and getting your eye in line with the scope. 0 -

One other aspect of the large 30mm tube & 50mm bell scopes is they often weigh somewhat more then simialar 1" tube & 40mm bell scopes. Not so much because of the tubes themselves but because all their guts are also increased in size. A 30mmtube & 50mm bell socpe on a target or beanfield rifle which will have very limited carry that see limited carry isn't any problem. But, it would not be my first choice on a to carry all day deer rifle..... 0 -

Absolutely agreed. This particular rifle will not see much carry as it is only shot from a bench or bipod. If I ever needed this much magnification on one of my hunting rifles, I'd really be in trouble [:p] Thanks for weighing in. I like to read EVERYTHING that anyone has to say. Many of you bring up points that I haven't thought about and some make no difference right now, but it will all be remembered for future reference. Again, I thank all of you0 -

Actually since an inch is 25.4mm you would be gaining 2.3mm in each direction, not 2.5mm. And, fwiw, in the construction of the scope it means a lot of elevation/windage difference. You have to remember that due to the rear objective being focused on the reticle, it doesn't move 1 for one to get the elevation it gets. It moves a lot less. So to give it an extra 2.3mm in each direction is a lot
Just to give you an example, I have an ST-10 scope built by U.S. Optics. It has a total elevation of 100 MOA and total windage of 100 MOA. My 1" Zeiss 6.5-20 and 1" 6.5-20 Leupold Vari-X III have total windages of about 60 MOA. My IOR, Meopta and Burris scopes (all 30mm tubes) don't move as much as my USO but they are in the 85-90 MOA travel range.0
