AR carbine buttstock
Hey all, I'm putting my AR together and I'm trying to decide what stock assembly to put on it. I was looking at this ATI (http://www.{elsewhere}/61789-7.html), but it says it's a commercial tube. What's the difference between the commercial and milspec on the stock? Does one fit better, or??? Any suggestions or recommendations are appreciated(the cheaper the better, with good quality still in mind). Thanks in advance!

There is a small difference in the diameter of them. The "mil-spec" is 1.14" and the commercial is 1.17" and may be longer and slanted in the rear. 0 -
So does the fit just depend on my lower? 0 -
The fit will depend on the size of buffer tube on your lower. Get a micrometer and measure the tube diameter. If it's 1.14 inches, you have a mil-spec. 1.17 inches and it's commercial. Then simply buy the appropriate sized stock. Check out the Mag-Pul CTR stocks. You can usually find one over on the auction side for under $80. 0 -
Each will screw into your lower, no problem. If the stock comes with the tube it will fit fine but if in the future you switch stocks then you have to match the stock to the tube - wrong one will be either too tight or too loose. Generally milspec is the more popular and if neither is specified in the advert it should be a mil spec. If you're hitting about $50.00 for 4 position stock, tube, buffer & spring that's about as cheap as it gets. For a 6 position this is pretty good - http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=195368985
It's not mine, just checked for a sample. Midway and Brownells have plenty to choose from also.0 -
Thanks for the education, this helps a lot! Now I can finish my project.[8D] 0 -
I assume by ATI you mean advanced technologies?
If so I would advise against it, youed be better of with just a plain telestock then it..
If you want stability the Magpul CTR, ACS, or UBR. Or the VLTOR IMOD club foot stock.

All else being equal, the military style extensions are a little thicker and therefore stronger, though the practical difference is miniscule.
For the same money, I'd go for the milspec.
In terms of bang for the buck, the Magpul stuff is pretty good.
The MOE stock is its entry-level (ie cheapest) stock, but its still better than most of the third-tier generic stuff out there.0 -
I believe the locking groove slot is different to isn't it? When I bought my Magpul sling mount plate they gave me two different keys for the locking groove. 0 -
In addition to the previously stated differences, the threaded portion of a milspec tube is manufactured with a slightly larger diameter than the main portion. The result is that the threads are noticeably raised in comparison with the smooth portion of the tube body.
The reason for this stepped up portion on the milspec design is that cutting the threads down into the tube body thins the walls and creates a weak spot directly at it's attachment point.
I prefer the milspec design. An aluminum tube based buttstock is weak enough without creating a shear point in order to shave a few cents in production cost.0
