Selling a pistol/shipping question

Cap- as an unlicensed person (meaning you do not hold a Fedral Firearms License) when shipping a handgun across a state line, it will need to go to either a Dealer (01 FFL) a Pawnbroker (02 FFL) or a licensed collector (03 FFL- covers 50 yr old guns). Buyer should provide you with license information, you ship to the address on the license. You can verify an 01 or 02 by computer, an 03 by phone.

The requirements for locks, etc, apply to a dealer, not you.

Shipping- make SURE it is unloaded. An unlicensed person cannot mail a handgun- only a dealer. You have two choices- ship by UPS or FedEx- they require it be shipped from a hub, and by next day air, adult sig required (about $75 last time I checked) OR- find a dealer that is willing to mail it (priority mail flat rate box). Even paying him a fee and postage, is likely cheaper.

In your auction, specify you are not a dealer- while it is legal, some dealers balk at receiving a gun from a non ffl. Include a xerox of driver's license with the gun to aid the receiving dealer in logging into his "bound book" records.

    Help any?

That's very helpful.. Thank you! I also have about half a box of .32 Western center fire ammo that is probably 50+ years old... should I include that in the auction (and ship seperately I'm assuming) or just turn in to gunsmith for disposal? I'm a modern shotgun guy so don't know much about the viability of vintage ammunition.

    Thanks again for your help...

Give the ammo away you can not ship ammo by USPS and it must be properly marked to ship UPS or FEDEX more cost and trouble then it is worth. look at post marked STICKY at top of this forum there is one that addresses shipping ammo.

As a first time seller, just one more item of advice. Get paid BEFORE you ship. Sounds simple but there are pitfalls. Unless you have a credit card account and can accept credit card payment, require a certified check or money order. But, here is where the problems arise. There are lots of VERY GOOD fake and stolen certified checks and money orders. Don't just deposit the check and immediately ship. Check with your bank and make darned sure the check has CLEARED before shipping. The buyer has waited this long. A few days longer won't hurt him, if he is legit. If he complains too loudly about you not shipping immediately, be suspicious. If you ship too soon and then find out that check bounced, the bank will just subtract it from your account and you will be out the money and the gun. You can put a statement in your listing that payment checks must clear before you will ship. Then there will be no misunderstanding.

Great advice everyone... really appreciate it. Is paypal an acceptable form of payment for firearms? Hadn't really thought about it before but also haven't seen it mentioned in the auctions I've looked at.

    NO !!!

PP will freeze your account, violates their terms of service, you will never see your money, and your little dog, too!

When all else fails, read the Gunbroker instructions:
