Pre-64 M-70 With Zeiss Diavari-C 3-9x36mm Scope
I just bought a used Pre-64 Model 70 in 300 H&H Magnum with a Zeiss Diavari-C 3-9x36mm scope. The scope says, "Made in East Germany." The rifle was manufactured in 1959 and all metal is 98% or better. It's missing the front sight hood, but that's about the only real flaw in the barreled action. Unfortunately, the original owner added a recoil pad and covered the original Winchester stock with tooled leather, and I don't know if I'll be able to remove the leather and restore the stock or not. However, because of the stock, I paid $1250 for the rig. I think I got a pretty good deal, but would welcome other's thoughts. I know nothing about Zeiss scopes, but a friend told me the scope was the frosting on the cake. It's in flawless condition and mounted in a one-piece Redfield base and rings. Would appreciate any thoughts on this recent purchase, as well as opinions on this particular Zeiss scope. Can someone tell me the current market price for this used scope in about 98% condition? Thanks.

FWIW: Stroebel's book lists a value of $700-$1,000 for that scope. 0 -
Hi, I deal with used optics alot and have sold several of them. They range in around $500 give or take a little. 0 -
Pictures, please! "Covered the stock with tooled leather? This I'd like to see. Depending on how the leather was attached, and how much there actually is, you might be able to salvage the stock? Even if not, it sounds like a good deal.

I'll see if I can attach some good pictures. It certainly gives the rifle an "interesting" look. I'm not sure what it was supposed to achieve other than customizing the gun to the customer's specifications. I was told the guy hunted in British Columbia quite often and had all his Model 70 stocks leather coated. According to the dealer who was selling the guns on consigment, the leather was added to protect the stock from scratches and moisture in the field. I'm not sure leather would provide the required mosisture barrier so, again, I'm a bit puzzled by the whole concenpt. The stock isn't partially covered with leather, it's fully covered from butt to fore end. Anyone else ever heard of this? 0
