I have a Wars Westernfield 410 single shot bolt action.
All it says on the barrell is
    Wards Western Field
    No.1A 410-3in PROOF TESTED
I have seen another one that had a rear rifle sight mine doesn't. I know that Wards didn't make their own guns but I haven't been able to find this one.
    Thanks for any info.

Monkey Wards was a large retailer and catalog seller during the 20th Century. Western Field was a Store Brand name they used on their guns. Best to post quality photos of the .410, somebody might recognize the manufacturer from the photos.

Instructions for posting photos can be found on a "Sticky" toward the top of our header page.

It's quite unusual to find a rear sight on a single barrel shotgun. Most just had a bead in front. Some manufacturers did make interchangeable rifle barrels that would work on the same receiver used by the shotgun. Perhaps this is what you saw? Ignore the previous sentences, I misread your original question and thought you had a break-open shotgun.

Pictures would be nice but just by the description, check out the Mossberg 183 and Western Field 1500 shotguns over on the GunBroker auction side. They look like what you are describing.

I think the Mossberg 183 is the same as a Western Field 1500. I may be wrong, but they sure look alike in the pictures I have seen.

Editted: Disregard the M-183. The poster below is right. This is not a single shot.

Proofhouse.com has a store brand chart that might help. Blue Book of Gun Values also has one.

As near as I can tell, Wards contracted no firearms from Winchester. They mostly sold Mossbergs, some Stevens and Marlins. I find no listings for a model 1A, but there was a model 1 which corresponds to a Mossberg model RF-1. None of my references tell me what the heck an RF-1 was.

Too bad the 183 is a reapeater and not a single shot...

could be a 73,70 or 173. Need Pics.

Model R was a .22 near as I can tell.

According to my cross reference list, a Western Field Model 1 is the same as a Mossberg RF-1.

Thanks for all the info guys, I guess it probably was made by Mossberg. I do know for sure it's a great shooter and it's never let me down. I've killed many squirrells and rabbits and two deer with it over the years.
