Better recoil pad?

For ease, and looks, I would say the slip on. However, there is nothing that beats the look of a propeerly ground and fitted one. My suggestion would be the SVL Limb Saver. IMHO, they are the best at recoil reduction.

Which would be a better recoil pad to put on a Turkish Mauser, slip on or the ones you remove the butt plate and screw to the stock?

    "Better" in what way?

Slip on are easier to install and easier to remove. You could use the same pad for different guns if you had to and that could be an advantage.

Screw-on *LOOK* better, in my opinion, and of course the "grind to fit" kind will give you a perfect fit, if you take the time to do the grinding.

Slip on will not change the origianl congiguration of the T. Mauser, if in fact it is originan. That is about all it has going for it. A pachmyer Decelerator will do a far better job of damping recoil.

The guestion is are you keeping the rifle more or less oringal or are you sporterizing it? The shape of the milspec Mauser stock is in general a poor match up to most pads. The problem is that the stock is wider at the bottom then on top and curved at the rear. The slip on pads have a lot of movement because of the curve. Assuming that you are willing to cut the curve off and use a screw on pad there are still problems. Many grind/cut to fit screw on pads have a metal plate inbedded in them that you don't want to grind down to. The best screw on pad that I have found for sporterizing a milspec M98 stock is the Pachmayr T550 white line trap pad which has no metal plate and is wide enough to fit up to the milspec wood.

Kick-eez pad in the color and thickness you desire. Also has small washers embedded in the plastic base plate. If you grind down to there it won't fit any stock anyway.[:D] For the odd shaped military stocks and mini-14's turn the pad upside down and fit as usual.
