I think it is referring to using commercial 308 winchester ammo. I believe anything that is loaded to NATO spec (so Fed. American Eagle, Win Whitebox marked as 7.62x51 or 7.62 NATO) should work.
The issue IIRC is the pressure curve of the ammo.0 -
Commercially loaded hunting type ammo is about five thousand PSI greater than 7.62 NATO. M14 was designed around the NATO rates of burn/pressures, which is less. That's why the cautionary statement you've read.
You can get 'USA', and Winchester White Box ammo loaded to military specs. The rounds will be military full metal jacket.
Any of the manufacturers that have their ammo in a plain white box, and the rounds are FMJ, will be the military style loading, designed for the M14 (and your civillian version).
On the auction side, or anywhere you find 7.62 in plastic battle packs, or packed in stripper clips/bandoliers will be good to use, also. The giveaway that it will be [safe] ammo is the full metal jacket. Best, Joe0 -
I have a Loaded and a Scout, so I suppose I should know this for sure but do not - is it due to Op Rod and recoil impulse effect on it as opposed to pressure in the chamber per se? 0 -

Yes - the pressure curve which includes the pressure in the system that hits the gas port when the bullet gets to that part of the barrel.0 -
You need to be careful, alot of the cheap surplus ammo on the market it highly corrosive and without thuroughly cleaninging with an amonia based solvent the insides of the rifle will rust quick.
Alot of times it will say something Like burden primed/corrosive or BP/C, wich lets you know it is corrosive.. Dont shoot surplus sellier and bellot, that stuff is just nasty.. I think there is a supply of german surplus ammo on the market that isnt corrosive that is reasonably priced.0 -
Yes! Hot ammo put stress on the operation rod the rifle will take the chamber pressure. The M1 Garand is in the same family of rifle and requires the same care when choosing the ammo. There is a valve you can purchase for the rifle that reduces the gas pressure in the gas system you can adjust to shoot any kind on ammo. The only problem with the valve every time you use a different type ammo you need to readjust the valve.
