    redfoxtoo,

This will depend on which Mauser barrel you're asking about. There are several different designs that vary in both dimension and shape. There are also two thread tenon diameters for Mausers:

    Large Ring = 1.100" x 12 TPI

    Small Ring = 0.980" x 12 TPI

Until recently all the Savage rifle barrels were threaded with 60 degree V-Threads at 20TPI with a thread diameter of 1.05". The new CRF short magnum actions are threaded 20TPI but with a thread diameter of 1-1/16".

Get yourself a pair of calipers and start measuring.

    Best.

    nononsense,
Thanks for the response. I measured the root (bottom of thread) dia. to be 1.015" (I think). Does that mean the mauser barrel is too small? Larry.

    redfoxtoo,

"Does that mean the mauser barrel is too small?"

Too small for what? You aren't explaining what you want to do.

If you expect to turn the Mauser threads off and use the existing tenon to re-thread then yes, it's too small.

It's actually easier to just get a barrel blank with the contour you desire then thread and chamber it for correct headspace. This process of re-using old barrels gets to be more of a waste of time and effort than it saves money. Spend your time and money doing it right the first time and enjoy your rifle.

As an addendum, Savage barrels pre-threaded and chambered are really inexpensive. All you need is a headspace gauge(s) and the barrel wrench/fixture which you will need anyway.

    Best.

    nononsense,
I'll heed your advice. My buddy has a barrel he would give me but I'll just get a Savage barrel. Many thanks.

    redfoxtoo,

I think that you're making a wise decision regarding these barrels. You will be much happier in the long run.

    Best.
