painting a wood gun stock please help
Ok here is the deal, I have a two piece gun stock from an old 22 rifle that i have sanded to bare wood. I was going to put an oil finish on it but the wood doesnt match ( forend is a lot lighter ) i have decided to just paint the wood instead. I have never done this before. What do i do? I dont want to invest a lot into this as it is not a show gun. But i would like it to look good, with a flat color, would like to be able to just spray on. Any one done this before? any help at all would be great. thank you

Why not go with a dark oil stain and then tung oil over...
If not any flat black paint should do.0 -
I tried dark stain on a small pat on both and it doesnt match as good as i want.I was also wandering how to fill the grain befor i paint . 0 -
A couple years ago my grandaughter wanted a pink .22 for Christmas. I bought a can of spray paint and hung the stock with a piece of wire and spray painted it with 3 light coats. Came out real nice. If you want to paint it I would suggest you do it the same way. 0 -
1chig,
"I was also wandering how to fill the grain befor i paint ."
You can get wood fillers at the local hardware store, usually oil base or water base. You can also use a sanding sealer. Follow the directions specific to that product before applying your paint.

Select your favorite color of rattle can finish (paint) and spray away. It's easiest to hang the wood parts by a coat hanger or such so you can walk around it while spraying. I have done this inside during cold weather using a refrigerator shipping box and lots of ventilation. You can do this outside but try to pick a calm day or protected area free from wind and dust (best you can).
Let the paint dry thoroughly. It can be sanded to eliminate surface irregularities, wiped clean and another coat applied.

Check out Brownells Aluma Hyde II. It's an epoxy based gun finish that will work on just about any surface.
Costs about $10 a spray can.
AH-II has a long curing period though. Don't touch up until it has fully cured.0 -
thanks for all the help[:)] 0 -
Well if you must paint it I did this British Enfield with Krylon Semi-Flat black #1613. The metal was done with an acrylic enamel primer. Looks just like it was parkerized. That finish has been on the gun for about 15 years.
