Go to Brownells and search rifle perts-triggers. Timony makes a very good trigger for you Mauser for about $90.00. All you need to look for is Mauser 98, it will fit.

Ok, It has a timney on it and it WAS a great trigger, but it's broken. So you're saying mauser 98 triggers will fit any mauser bolt action? That confuses me because midway lists them for several different models.....

Generally speaking, the Mauser Timney triggers fit either large ring (98) or small ring (95,96) type actions. They also come with or w/o a trigger mounted safety. If you're sure the rifle is a model 98, then all you need to determine is the safety type. Is the safety on the trigger itself or on the back of the bolt?

I've had some nightmare experiences with Timney service and quality control, though it's been several years now. You might want to check out some of the other triggers you'll find at Brownells. Maybe Timney has cleaned up their act, I hope so.

Most Mlitary Mauser 98 have the safety on the rear Cocking piece, while most Civilian Mauser 98 rifles have the safety on the side as part of the trigger. some military actions were modified when they were converted and new barrels were installed like yours in 22/250 . You want to stay with the same kind of safety that it now has or you will have to do extra work modifying some of the other parts of this rifle.

I probably should have mentioned this before [B)] The safety is on the rear of the cocking piece and I do believe it was a service rifle that has been converted. The only original thing left is the action. The barrel, trigger, and stock have already been changed long ago. So just to be clear, I just need to find a trigger for a mauser 98 because it will fit all type actions? FWIW, I also know that there are better triggers to be had than timney, but that's what dad had on it and that's what he wants it replaced with. If I could find a shilen or a jewel, I would try to talk him into it but Midway doesn't carry them...

You want a trigger for a "Model 98 without safety lever" (means there is no safety on the trigger itself).
IF you didn't have the cocking piece safety in place, than you would want a trigger with safety.
The 98 triggers fit Model 98 (which is what you said you had) and later Mauser's, this is not only the most common of the Mauser patterns, it's also the first with the cock on opening feature.

Got it. Thanks guys. What is the cock on opening feature? I'm still learning about this gun. It's the first mauser I've worked on

Most popular bolt actions, following the 98 design, cock on openning the bolt. Work the action, with chamber and magazine empty, and you can feel the resistance and cocking work done as the bolt is raised from its fully closed position. The only work to be done on the forward motion is to chamber the round and lock the bolt to action.
In contrast the Arisaka (and maybe the Lee Enfield if I recall correction) and likely some others, cock on the closing motion. For most part folks who were brought up on one system, don't like the other.
I don't know that either system holds an advantage, but apparently back in the hayday of "military to sporter conversions" a lot of 'smiths were kept busy converting "cock on close" actions to the more popular cock on open design.

Ok, makes sense. This one is definitely a cock on close then. Would that pinpoint it to being a specific model or specific time frame of manufacture? Not that it makes a difference, now I'm just curious. Dad said it is an FN mauser made in belgium.... I don't have it in front of me at the moment or I'd post a serial number if I could find one and some pics

I'll start a pt 2 thread with this since it's about to be locked.
