I'm new to shooting suppressors and was just wondering if i need to stick to a certain caliber or if i could shoot multiple calibers out of one can. I'm thinking about getting a 223 suppressor so i can shoot 223 or 22 ammo through it. I need to know if it will be just as effective with both calibers or if the 223 will be better because thats what the can is made for, although i realize anything supersonic will not be silent. 0 -
If you want to use the silencer for both .223 and .22LR then you must buy the one designed for .223 centerfire ammo...
It will be "overkill" for the .22LR/shorts/subsonics, but it will stand up to the pressure-levels from the expanding gases at the .223 muzzle..
It will most likely be just as effective with the .22LR's as one made specifically for that.
A silencer for .22LR /shorts/subsonics can be made much smaller and from much lighter materials, even tough plastics or polymers work fine for that..
such a .22LR silencer will blow up if used on a .223 rifle..0 -
So lots of stuff there.
You can shoot any caliber though a silencer that has a = or smaller diameter AND = or less pressure. The .223 can will be = or more effective because it has more internal space for expansion of gas. At the same time though a silencer can only work as well as the amount of gas coming out. So if you made a silencer the size of 5 gallon bucket and the max size needed was a Pringles can you would not see an extra reduction from the larger.
.22 is one of the places a dedicated can is almost a must if you plan on shooting any volume of ammo. .22 is very dirty and as such can plug up a silencer within 10k rounds which is not hard to do. With a .22 it is highly suggested that you get a silencer that can be taken apart for frequent cleanings.0
