Looking for a Winchester 40-82 I used to own
Hi. Looking for a needle in a haystack. In 1998 I sold a Winchester 1886 40-82 rifle in Sacramento. I'm trying to find that particular rifle to possibly purchase it. It is serial number 16864. Here's what it was like when I sold it: It had an octagonal barrel. The magazine had been shortened and there was a dovetail patch on the bottom side of the barrel. It had double set triggers. A fold up sight was on the stock. On the left side of the receiver there were holes drilled and tapped for a sight.
Any information would be appreciated. I'm not a gun collector but have discovered since I sold it that it had belonged to my great grandfather and have a couple of pictures of him with the rifle from the early 1920's. I know it's a near impossibilty of finding it but I thought I'd give it a shot. Thanks.
Thanks,
Dann

Dan, your best bet to run across that rifle will be the Big Reno Gunshow in Nov if you sold it locally in Sac. Bert H has every Winchester in the two rooms mapped out before they open the doors to the public. Stop by his table and ask, if it's there, he'll know what table.

That is really a daunting task, but I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you recover it! 0
