pre-64 70 African barreled action worth?
How much could I safely pay for a 99% condition pre-64 model 70 458 barreled action? Jeweled bolt, non-jeweled magazine follower, non-super grade floor plate, missing rear sight, serial on bolt matches.
Thanks

Safely? as in to get your money back out? $500. Without the rifle being complete there is a lot of lost money in the collector side. After that it becomes a curiosity (read: project) for it's ability, not collect-ability.
It's a good sound piece to build yourself a custom on. Although, I'm sure you'll hear it down the road if you do...."You should have left it the way it came from the factory."[;)]0 -
Mike,
There where 1,226 pre 64 458 model 70 Africans built. Without the original stock and rear sight it will never be a true collector peice. The odds of finding an original stock and rear sight are slim and none. So what do you want to do with the barreled action? It's probably worth about what they are asking for it. Is it ever going to be worth 3 times that amount? I wouldn't bet on it. If you want to have it stocked, put an after market rear sight on it and have about a thousand dollars into a dam good $1000 shooter, your on your way.
