Yes I was just going off what the barel said. Still learning the ropes when it comes to fire arms. Could shoot them and do general care but never got into models and pricing.

Bert is definitely going to need pictures, especially closeups of all markings. This thread shows you how to post pics:

The model 62 in .256 is a Marlin. It was made in that chambering and the .30 carbine. While not exactly rare, they are a bit unusual. I suggest you look on the auction side to see what they are selling for. You are right that the cartridges will be hard to find and expensive. The cartridge is basically the .357 magnum necked down to .25 caliber.

If it is a Winchester Model 62, it is not factory original if it actually shoots .256 Winchester Magnum cartridges. Additionally, I have serious reservations about the safety of the rifle. The Model 62 was designed for .22 rimfire cartridges, which generate considerably less pressure than the .256 Magnum.

Are you absolutely sure that it is a Winchester Model 62 and not a Marlin Model 62 (which was factory chambered for the .256 Winchester Magnum)?

It is a Marlin. I'm not very knowledgable about rifles and I'm slowly getting education when I can. Any help is much appreciated. The images are the best in the world but hopefully they will help you out. I plan on taking some better images tonight, hard to do with a 2 year old.

They are an interesting gun I have one in 30 carbine. there were rumors that there were several other calibers made in centerfire that were not cataloged but I have not seen one. They ask a lot for them where I live (midwest) but I don't know if they get the money/ 500.00 to 750.00. They prilce for a box of ammo (50 ronds) is $70.00+ unless you find someone who doesn't know what they have. That takes it out of the shooting catagory unless you want to form your own brass which I am told is a pain in the neck.

Well I will either keep the gun and suffer the cost of reloading and doing my own brass, which my cousin has the dies for, or just sell it and get something a lot more common. I have fired the rifle, a long time ago, and it is a very nice rifle. I'm just not sure how pratical it is for me to have living in town. I have a nice little 22 for my small game shooting and really have no reason to keep this caliber of a gun. Just can't decide.
