AK 74 pre-ban imports?
Have been looking for information on AK 74- basically if there were any of the various forms imported into US prior to 1994 (pre-ban). What I've found in reading up on the history of the 5.45x39 is that Russia started manufacturing these in the 1970's but have been unable to find reference to any guns or parts (receivers specifically) imported here earlier than the last 10 or so years.
Are there pre-ban 5.45x39 AK's around? What might I expect to pay for one?

Pre ban for imported firearms are those guns brought into the country prior to the 1989 Bush Ban on semi automatic rifles with a military style appearance and there were no semi automatic AK rifles: AKM, AK-47 or AK-74 imported from the Soviet Union prior to the 1989 ban. The most common of the AK-74 rifles are from Romania and all of these were imported post 1989 as "sporters" which lacked the military type features like pistol grips. 0 -
Of course Mark nailed it.
The 1994 AWB has/had NOTHING to do with imported firearms. It was a ban on DOMESTIC (made in USA) firearms that had certain features.
The 1989 ban, which is still in full effect deals with IMPORT firearms. The 1989 ban stops the importation of "non-sporting" firearms.0 -
okay...thanks for info. Been living with the continuation of the 1994 ban (New York copied it and is still in effect) for long enough that I had to be reminded of the elder Bush's straying.
So how frequently is one of the sporter models in 5.45x39 found in the market? I have yet to run across any. Would still have to deal with something manufactured prior to late 1994.0 -
Look for a new Arsenal Saiga in 5.45. I imagine you would need one without the "evil" features - threaded barrel & bayonet lug.
Would be easy to have those permanantly modified.0 -
okay...here's where we get sticky...
What the NY assault weapon statute actually does is ban the import into the state of any AK receiver or clone ( there are other receiver types listed, but for now I'll deal with AK) manufactured after September 1994. This is the reason that I would have to look for a 5.45 firearm manufactured prior to that time. It could have been imported later, or put together later, but not manufactured later. So all the rifles I've found or read about with obvious AK receivers dated after 1994 (AK 74's ...etc), are not legal for NY.
Next question- is the Saiga receiver an AK clone??
I would call it as a yes- but there are differences- so ...any opinions? And thus we create a space for lawyers to make money...
Still looking for info on whereabouts of 5.45 firearms manufactured prior to 1995.
Thanks.
(Addressing the "ugly, evil" or prohibited features issue. The NY law on attachments is not limited to the firearms specifically named in the bill but applicable to all semi autos of any caliber using a detachable magazine. An AK is not legal in the state because it has no threaded muzzle, bayonet lug...etc.. it is the date on the receiver.
Having said that...a lot of the AK's around here are of the kind produced after the '89 ban- pieced together without the "bad" features... but the statute still doesn't allow receivers past 1994.0 -
