Oil Finish
I have a very nice gun in perfect condition with an oil finish. Id like to add some coats of boiled linseed oil myself. Do I need to do any prep work? Do I use my bare hands?

Not certain wether you are refering to a pistol or long gun. If its a long gun. To get best penetration of the new oil you would need to open the grain some. If you have any scrol work or grip etching leave that. If its a choice gun you could test without any prep.
If you have some minor scratches its a good opportunity to take those off with light sandpaper. If stock is clear 400 grit sandpaper would give you the prep for any new oil finish.
I prefer Tung oil.0 -
If your wood is dirty or greasy, you may want to wipe it with a rag dampened with mineral spirits first.
I prefer Formby's tung oil. Be sure to use a freshly opened can, never old oil. Pour some oil into a cup & thin with mineral spirits, as straight tung oil (or linseed oil) may dry sticky.
All of these chemicals should be used in a well ventilated area, & with utility gloves (or purple Nitrile gloves). Avoid skin contact, as they are carcinogenic, mutagenic, & toxic.
