Affordable pistol
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am looking for an affordable 9mm auto pistol ($200 range) that is small enough to carry not sacraficing reliability and safety. Just not wanting to dish out $400+ right now. Any advise wouod be appreciated.

Not a lot in that range except the Hi-Point.
If you can manage the $300 range, there are a bunch of Smith & Wesson models that I would rather have, such as this one:

Here's a review that will give you a good idea of the new guns in that caliber:

The KelTec P9 & P11 series are fairly close to your specifications, except price wise they will probably run you more if you buy a new one.
I carried a P11 for many years as my CCW, it good value for the money. All KelTec firearms have quite a following on the net. GOOGLE them and you will get a whole range of opinions. Keep in mind though opinions are like rectums, everybody has one.0 -
You might over the auctions for a Makarov 9x18. Dang good pistol and in your price range. 0 -
Few things to keep an eye on.

$200 is really scraping the bottom of the bucket for a 9mm luger gun, PARTICULARLY a decent quality compact one intended for concealed (as opposed to open/service) carry.
Honestly, I wouldn't buy a Hi-point (period). It has a good warranty, but its simply not a durable weapon. Its also not particularly well balanced or slim.
Kel-Tec P11 is OK, but the small size and blocky grip mean its not that comfortable to shoot. PF-9 is a little better, though I think you're going to have a hard time finding one for only $200.
These aren't small, but they might make reasonable choices for under $200.
The Tanfoglio is an Italian clone of the CZ-75, though this particular one has a decocking safety. Again, its not particularly small or light (ie its a full sized all steel service pistol), but IMO its a steal if you can get it for $200 + shipping.
CZ99 is an overlooked pistol partly based on the Sig 226. They don't cost much, but from what I hear, they're quite decent. Again, not a small or light gun, but good value for your money.
Zastava M88 is a Tokarev clone. Its a fairly dated design, and IMO not that ergonomic, but it should be strong and reliable.

If you can save your pennies and go to $300, there are a number of good used guns in 9mm that could be great choices, including surplus type Smith and Wesson and Ruger autos. (You might be able to pick up one of those at $250 or so, but you'll have to be patient and look around). Pretty much ANY Smith auto should be strong and reliable, and Smith will back you up if you have a problem. Ditto for Ruger.
If you're willing to look at guns OTHER than 9mm, there are some pretty good choices at your $200 budget. For example, you could still probably find a good condition Smith and Wesson model 10 .38 special revolver at that price, and its quite a good gun for the money. Alternatively, of the military surplus guns in 9mm MAKAROV (ie 9x18mm), like the CZ-82 could be a good choice.
The Makarov guns in particular make great carry guns since they're small and robust. The Makarov 9x18 round isn't all that powerful, but its a little better than .380ACP and less expensive.0 -
+1 on the Makarov 9x18 pistol for the money they are hard to beat and there are plenty of places to shop for them one the net, I have a Russian. This link will take you a supplier who has Makarov style pistols right at 209.00 and up.

Another +1 on something in 9x18 Makarov. I have a FEG PA63 I paid $150 for a couple years ago.
Good strong surplus firearm.
You can run a search here on the auction side by 9mm or 38 special and $200. Ought to be able to find something. Otherwise keep an eye out at your local shops for used guns. Ought to be able to find something decent in that price range.
Picked this old Smith & Wesson up for $150 too. Someone had spray painted it black. A little citrus strip, complete disassembly, and it's good to go.
I also like the 7.62x25 Tokarev pistols but would carry chamber empty.0 -

try this link to auctions ending in 24 hrs w/ no reserve currently under 200.
For that price, I see a decent 9mm or two, plus some 38 revolvers. For what you want to use it for I'd look at the 38s... the new Armscor ones are a good deal for the price...0 -
Check J&G Sales and others for 9mm Makarov pistols. Loaded with Hornady XTP bulets - this combo makes a damn fine defense weapon. CZ-82's are also C&R eligible. Very reliable! 0
