Since no Japanese rifle had a turned down bolt other than the Type 97, it's probably been screwed with.
That also would explain why you have only a barreled action and not the stock.
    Too bad.

That is what I thought too but the lack of any markings on the top of the receiver and the later type simplified front sight got me wondering what it is. I have never seen one with the mum and type markings totally and smoothly removed (they are usually pretty deep and leave some visible indication). I took another look at the bore and I believe it is chromed after all. I guess this could be a normal T99 and someone removed the markings so nicely they appear to have never been there. Wonder if the frt sight was just filed down? Do the early front sights with ears have adjustable windage or are they fixed blade like the late ones?

Jap trainers,,,are virtually endless varieties..I have a few and they are all different. One has a company stamp on the top but most don't. As p3 stated, it has a turned bolt, someone bubbaed it.,,,I would not shoot it, since imo,,it never was a live ammo gun without the Mum as service rifles had. My 2 cents/

If it has rifling, I doubt it's a trainer. Only trainers I'm aware of are all smooth bore. And from my references, all T-99 sniper rifles were from the 1st (0) Series made at Nagoya and Kokura Arsenals. My guess is that bubba got to your rifle. Pics would help.
