Are you certain of the barrel length? Measure the barrel from the cylinder forward, not where the barrel meets the frame, my sort of educated guess would be the barrel is 6.5" long.

Are the grips factory original - big diamond in the middle right around the screw hole? Is there a large screw on the upper right of the frame just below the rear sight?

IIRC, the 1950 is the thin barrel version that later (with a heavier barrel) became the more common 1955 Model - left & right side pictures of the entire gun would be helpful, in general I would say you have a very nice, relatively scarce Smith.

Edit - not to burn up a response, but OP sent me 4 excellent photos of the gun - sorry, I too don't know how to post photos but will forward to anyone who can & will. It's a 100% "looks like new" Model 1950 Target with a 6.5" bbl, patridge front/adjustable rear and correct diamond target grips. S serial number of course. Didn't even see a turn line, no wear anywhere.

My "crappy" little 1955 and I are slightly jealous ....[:p]

The 1950 Army was the final development of the 1917 (Until the reissue of about five years ago.) and was standard with 5 1/2" barrel. They made less than 4000 of them in 16 years, so an unfired one will be worth a good deal of money. I won't guess how much.

He sent me the pictures, too.
    It is indeed a nice 1950 Target 6 1/2".
It looks like it has a target hammer and standard trigger, my Outdoorsman is that configuration.

Since no one has suggested a value I will give you what the 2009 Blue Book of Gun Values has as a retail price.

This is for a .45 Hand Ejector Model of 1950, Military (1950Army). .45 ACP Cal. 5 1/2" bbl.

    100% NA
    98% $1,800
    95% $1,400

To be 100% you should have the original box, warranty card, tools, etc.

Prices may be somewhat lower than the above due to the economy.
