Hello everyone.
I'm a total novice to guns, etc. Actually I dont' even own a firearm but I am seriously interested in purchasing one. A friend of mine shot a M44 and was telling me how great of guns they were, etc. I've noticed on GunBroker.com that the Hungarian/Romanian models are CHEAP like scary cheap, where as the Russian ones are more expensive.....why is that?
Thanks in advance0 -
The Hungarian M44s that I've had the chance to handle, all seemed to be at least as good as the Russians. IIRC, the wood on the Hunkies was a closer textured (Baltic Birch?) and had a slightly different color - more reddish - than the Russians. As with all M44s, work the action a bunch of times - to test smoothness and lock-up - and make sure the bolt doesn't rattle when in battery. Check the sights for axis alignment. And make sure the furniture is tight. Not much else to check except for the standard bore condition check. The price is excellent. We were selling the Hungarian pieces for about 50 bucks more than the Russians - $165 to $175. 0 -
The Hungarians that I've seen, generally speaking, are in better shape than the Russian rifles that saw use in the war. This is to be expected of course. 0 -
I had a Hungarian "02" code M44 a while back. Workmanship and finish seemed better then the wartime Russians, as the previous poster noted.
One problem I did have with it though was that the extractor recess machined in the breech end of the barrel, wasn't as deep as the Russian giving me malfunctions. This was because it had a mismatched bolt from a different 44.
As long as your bolt is original and numbered to the receiver, doubt if you will have the same problem.0
