Remington 870. Simple, reliable, easy to use and I believe it can be had with a "youth stock".
Pump guns are easy for beginning shooters to learn on. They have few moving parts and operate at the speed that is most comfortable to the shooter..their own! For beginning trap I'd say a modified choke in 12 ga. using 1 oz 2 3/4 dr. loads with no. 9 shot should get the desired response. No worries about where that empty shell is going, it should end up in the shooters hand and then the shell bag. (start 'em young)
    2 cents more.

I am a Mossberg man so I suggest something along the lines of a Mossberg 500 Bantam.

They make a Remington 870 express youth model in 20 Ga. Thats what my son used for many years. then I got a Full sized stock for it.

Go with a Remington Model 1100. You can buy shorter stocks and the reduced recoil will make shooting it more fun.

    Hello Herschel,

one of the few things that Mark C. and i disagree on...hehehehe. I would take the Reming 870 Youth anyday, as I have had nothing but problems with Mossberg anything. I actually believe they make an 870 Express youth model too. If buget is not a problem, then an 1100 youth, or a Browning BPS youth.

    Best

    EDIT 1

    forgemonkey,

I do believe it would be more of a handicap to a young shooter to get them flinching with the heavier recoil of the 12 guage. That is something it will stick with them for a while.

All great advise above. My 2cents:
Started at 11 years old with 20 ga. 870, cut down stock. Although a good gun, I would not recommend that method unless cost is an issue.
    1. The 20 ga. has the same kick and a worse pattern then a 12 ga.
    2. The pump limits you to trap (as a beginner, yes it can be done).
    3. The shot pattern hurts your scores (as stated above).
    4. As he grows the auto can change stocks and last a lifetime for trap, skeet, sporting clays, and hunting. Pump can do trap and field "reasonably".

I would recommend a good auto (Beretta 391 or Browning Gold are good, like the 1100 or 1187 except for the gas ring)that is ported, fit to the shooter and a good recoil pad.

I checked numerous shotguns (with instruments) with the same loads several years ago for my wife for recoil. Settled on the Lady Gold Browning, large stock with recoil reducer built in, large pad, ported, 28 Inch barrel. Feels like shooting a 28 ga.

Other method is to buy a 20 ga.pump and then buy another gun next year if he likes shooting. Either way, he'll have fun.
