    vulcan9,

    Welcome to GB forums.

An aperture sight (peep sight) will by design work like a lens to focus your eye. The size of aperture depends on your eye sight & the use/range you want the rifle to work at an optimum.

Check www.midwayusa.com & www.brownells.com for 'sight aperture'. They both will have them in various sizes.

You may also want to try a globe front sight with interchangable inserts, also avalible thru the above outlets.

Neon/white nail polish will work also on the front sight. Sorry as we get older, our eyes do too.

You could always move that 100 yard target in to 75 yards or even 50 yards and keep yourself sharp at those distances.

You could also take a drill bit that is one size larger to the aperture opening of the rear sight, this helps sometime. Good Luck and dont drill and tap that gun.

am looking for a way to enhance visibility of front site on a winchester model 54 (30/06-serial #777) in VG condition. Presently has origional peep site and I do not want to drill and tap for scope as this would destroy collectability value. Have checked Hiviz etc and found no easy commercial solutions-so far- I modified a flourescent orange arrow nock and fixed it to the site with hotglue-this way it can be removed with a hot hair dryer without harming the origional site.Any advise/suggestions?

If you just want to make it stand out a little bit, you can just coat the front sight with any number of aftermarket enamel paints specifically intended for use on gun sights that will do essentially the same thing.

The paints can then just be dissolved off with CAREFUL use of the appropriate solvent.

Some of them are luminescent, and will glow brightly in dim light or the dark after being exposed to a bright light source (especially sunlight).

Simple brightly colored nail polish or model enamel will do the same thing, and you can get it at any hobby or craft store.

I'd say the "best" solution is to try and find (or create) a fiber optic front sight. Williams gun sight company has many many models that fit a variety of guns. I can't speak to which specific model might fit your Winchester, but I'd be a bit surprised if they didn't have one that would fit.

I deer hunt with a 1903 NRA Sporter using the Lyman 48 rear sight. I just remove the disc and aim through the threaded hole. The front sight has been replaced with a small bead. This was a common practice in the old days and gives adequate accuracy for hunting. The larger opening makes the sight and target appear brighter than when aiming through the small hole in the aperture disc.

Instead of enamel, think about the dayglow poster paint that is available at Walmart in the craft section. They have a wide range of dayglow colors, cheap, and since it is water soluble, you can clean it off your sights very easily if you change your mind.
Even their smallest bottle will last forever since you are using such a tiny amount. I keep one or two colors in my shooting box and can change colors in a minute depending on what I need to contrast with my target of the day.
