Remington 673 308
I want to re-barrel the 673, would like to get a 24-26 inch in 300 SAUM. Is it a practical project and what barrel would you recommend.

TxCoyote,
"Is it a practical project and what barrel would you recommend."
It depends on your definition of 'practical'.
Besides the new barrel and associated gunsmithing costs, you should be aware that the bolt face will need to be opened up and a new extractor fitted, either a Sako-style or M-16 style. Then you need to get a new magazine box (the one with the cut outs in it for SAUM cartridges) with a new follower. The rails and feed ramp will need to be adjusted to handle the fatter cartridges.
Price this work out and see if it meets your needs and budget. If not, then it's impractical.

TxCoyote---I just did almost the same thing, with one huge difference. I would trade/sell the 308 you now have, and acquire a 300 SAUM in the 673 (there are 4 on the auction now). I'd chrono. the new gun with your chosen ammo. If that wasn't what you wanted, then I'd do the re-Bbl. as described. This way, you will not have to fiddle ($$$) with the new action, and bolt face, extractor, mag box, will all be the same. Only the re-barrel/ headspace will be involved. I had Douglas rebarrel a 673 in 6.5 rem mag with a 24" bbl. It was already a 6.5. Just over $400. You're looking at well over $1,000 total cost with your plan. HAWKSHAW 0 -
Ok, local gun dealer has a used 300 673 in excellent condition, he will trade with me. He suggested a 338 also. I did not realize I would have to have that much modification done. The 338 he has was built using a Savage action, he has an excellent price on it.
I appreciate your time, there is a lot I do not know about building a rifle and buying one is easier. Will be back with more questions later.0
