Out of my range but one is being auctioned Saturday. SN 23450 but in the description it says the Winchester records for this SN are blank. How can that be. Might this be a gun Galazan made from parts. Everything on the gun is clearly Winchester and not fake
Thats to bad it does not letter. Let us know what it did at the auction.

That is about half of what it should have sold for if it was an authentic 28-gauge gun.

Bert your term authentic has me puzzled as we corresponded on this. It doesn't letter due to poor record keeping I suspect but I have no doubt it is authentic. Maybe just semantics. No doubt a letter would be great but this has to be real

I have no doubt that it is a Model 21, but what is in question, is whether or not it was originally built as a 28-gauge. Based on the price it sold for, my bet is that it was not. More than likely it was deemed to be a modified 20-gauge gun by the people who inspected it and bid on it.

It was not a case of "poor" record keeping... I can guarantee that it was originally recorded by the custom shop. Instead, it is possibly a case of poor records preservation. There is a possibility that Pauline Muerrle has the records for that serial number.

Bert's one of the experts and I for sure am not but I did look at it. If it was a modfied 20 the records if they existed would indicate that. You have to find a 28 barrel set winchester stamped with a correct SN Aren't the barrels SN's stamped also? I didn't buy it so no vested interest. I proxy bid for a buddy who knows them well 10K Maybe its a fake but I doubt it. As I recall Pauline has boycotted GB so if she has the records we might never know or hopefully she does monitor on occasion and would be willing to jump in . No real controversy this one. Keep in mind for it to be a fake someone would need an unserialized set of 28 ga barrels and more importantly a 20 ga receiver with no records. Stranger things have happened I guess but it sure would have to be well planned

Galazan comes to mind. Keep in mind that $$$$$ motivates the not so honest people out there.

    chuckle,

selling price of the Win model 21 28 gauge made me recall a good friend I hunted with many years ago who'd brough home 2 model 21s when on leave from Army back about 1965. He'd gone to address listed in local newspaper ad of guns forsale in Virginia near where he was stationed. Address was a home, woman there had quite a few rifles and shotguns to sell. Two were model 21s in 12 gauge that woman wanted about $150 each for. My friend quickly bought them. Would have bought more from woman, but being in army, all he could afford. Anyway, after purchase made, my friend commented to the woman about maybe she was selling the rifles and shotguns for too low a price. Woman then replied why priced so low...she was mad at her husband, who was out of town on business. She said, he loved his guns more than he did her and thought she'd teach him a lesson by selling all his guns while husband was away. With that information, my friend quickly left making sure the woman didn't know his name and that he was in army stationed nearby.

Friend gave one to his father for Christmas present and kept the other for himself.
