Winchester Model 12 butt stocks
Hello,
I just found a nice original butt stock for my Winchester Model 12 16 gauge. It has a few scratches on it that I would like to touch up. What did Winchester use to stain and protect their stocks? It is a 1956 model so I am assumming it might be a varnish. Has anyone tried refinishing their Model 12 stock? Where can I get the right screws to mount the butt plate? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,
I finally bought a Winchester Model 12 16 gauge. The gun is in very good condition except it has a different butt stock that had been added. Does any one have any advise on where I could purchase one. My gun was made in 1956. Would a 12 gauge butt stock fit or did Winchester have ones for specific gauges? Does anyone reproduce butt stocks that would fit my gun. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.0 -
John,
I can give you some help. Stip it, dont sand, pull the dents out with a damp tea towel and the wifes iron. Lightly sand these if you have to, do so sparingly. You can't replace what you take off. I use Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil on old Winchesters, this is a personel preference. There will be others along that may have better ideas for finish. I have a model 12 Trap that was redone at the factory more than 30 years ago, it has a very fine hand rubed oil finish. www.gunparts.com will have screws for your butt plate.
