S&W Chiefs Special / Nickel / Serial 201
Anyone know approx value? My Fathers police service weapon in 1950's thru 1960's. Trigger Guard is slightly distorted due to perps head. Original Hand grips, One chamber always empty under the hammer for my 50 years. Fully functional and Fires great. Any help would be nice.

Welcome to the forums.........
Smith model 36's are very common, however nickel versions are not as common. A gun with a distorted (bent) triger guard is not worth a whole lot, maybe a couple hundred. Pictures would help.
Why you would carry it with 4 rounds in stead of 5 I dont know. The practice of leaving the chamber under the hammer empty is something done with older style single actions, not double actions.0 -
I was always told that leaving the chamber empty under the hammer would prevent accidental discharge if the weapon fell and hit on the hammer...I'll try to load some pictures once I learn how - LOL 0 -
That was true for the older Colt single action "cowboy" guns. That is where the practice started. On those, when the hammer was down, the hammer and firing pin actually rested on the primer. Not so with your model 36. It is quite safe to carry fully loaded. There is no reason to carry that model with an empty chamber. 0 -
