Winchester Model 12 16 gauge shotguns
Hello,
I am interested in purchasing a field grade Winchester model 12 16 gauge shotgun. I am currently looking at a 1924 model and a 1958 model. The 1924 model has a 26" nickel steel barrel with a modified choke. The metal has about 40% of the blueing left and it is rust and mark free. The wood is all original except that a recoil pad has been added. The receiver and barrel connection is tight. The 1958 model has a 28" Winchester proof steel barrel and a modified choke. The metal has been reblued and the wood has been refinished. The receiver and barrel connection is a little loose. I plan on using it for squirrel, dove, grouse, and pheasant. Both guns are the same price. Is there an advantage having one gun over the other for what I want to use it for? If something would break would I be able to get parts for the gun? Who could I send the gun to to make sure it is safe to shoot? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,
I just bought a Winchester Model 12 16 gauge. I understand that I should not shoot steel shot through the barrel. I have a 28" barrel choked modified. Would I be able to shoot lead slugs and #4 buck shot through this gun? Thank you.0 -
Hello Jmoe131. You should be ok with the #4 buckshot. The slugs, I just don't know. Steel shot would ne a no no. The 16 gauge Model 12s have exceptionally thin-walled barrels and I, personally, would not be comfortable with firing slugs through it even though "Winchester Proof Steel" is a very, very strong chrome moly steel. How old,and in what condition is your Model 12? 0 -
Winchester advertised that all of their Model 12s were safe with slugs. All sizes of buck shot are perfectly safe as well. 0 -
It is a 1956 year model in good condition. Thank you for your help. 0 -
I inherited my grandads model 12-16ga 26" mod bbl that I grew up hunting with ,,,, my grandad killed 40+ whitetails with it before my father killed 50+ whitetails with it,, and I have shot 30+ with it.
It has shot every slug thats been made and shoots them all well although it doesnt like to eject the remington sluggers,, I personally like the way the brenneke's shoot.
So dont be afraid to shoot slugs with it,,,, buy a few different makes and see what it likes then have fun hunting with it,,,,
Thats why Winchester made em !!!
