    To clarify,

I'm not looking to stop this round for safety reasons. I want to retrieve the round, and I don't want to have to dig it out of a berm of dirt.

My guess is no more than 2 back to back...

Milk jugs are cheap. Use three or four and hope the bullet path stays straight enough to capture it.

I would guess that one of two things will happen.

Either the bullet will shatter into a million pieces, or it will penetrate more than two milk jugs. The .308 Winchester will punch through trees, armor plate, etc. I'd say 4-5 jugs.

Check that link out. The .308 is on page 3 or 4. If you want to recover the bullet, a FMJ or AP is what you will probably need.

I won't try it. A long tank of water would work better, at least 4 foot long. see this web page. http://www.stevespages.com/page8f45acp.html

A 165 grain Gameking will stop in the 4th bottle. Yours might stop in the third, but I think it will go to #4.

6 or more. Those are pretty tough bullets

I don't know (though my guess is not LESS than three).

Note that once they strike anything, the bullets may not go in a straight line anymore.

In other words, you may find bullets exiting the SIDE of your water jugs and have some trouble retrieving them unless the sides are blocked off. See here for some relevant testing:

Why don't you try it and tell us the results? (And take pictures!).

You probably don't really intend to try, but I strongly doubt you're going to be able to reload the bullet and use it again after this! [;)]

No, nothing like that. I just have a brand new firearm, and thought it would be unique, for me anyway, to have the first projectile that went down the barrel.

I am going to try, and I'll post the results. I'll likely need help with pics though.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Mgderf,

There is a Sticky at the top of this forum titled 'Posting Photographs' which will get you posting pictures right away. If you run into problems, e-mail me or post again.

    Best.
