Scope help!
I have a Winchester Model 54 with weaver scope bases. I moved a Thompson Center Scope off to the muzzle loader (it worked fine on the 54).
Bought a nice new Zeiss scope. Mounted it on the 54 but couldn't get the windage to come closer than 3 inches at 25 yards. Redfield and Leupold bases give me the extra windage adjustment. But they don't make mounts for the model 54. Leupold Mod 70 base works on the front but I can only get one rear mount screw in. Distance is a little too short for the second screw to line up.
I'd really like to use the new scope for pronghorns (coming up in 2 weeks!). I don't think I have time for the gunsmith to re-drill until post season. So I'm thinking go back to the weaver mounts and try to shim the rear of the scope over.
Any idea on shim material?
(has to be somewhat soft, don't want to damage the scope)
Any idea on thickness to start with?
Any other thoughts?
Go with one rear screw and lock-tite for a couple weeks??
Thanks!

Weaver mounts and Burris Zee rings should fix you up - the Zee rings have inserts to allow for lots of adjustment. 0 -
The Zee rings with the inserts are a good idea. However, if you decide to go with shims, shim the base(s), not the scope/rings. That is, put a shim under one side of the base and if that's not enough, put a shim under the opposite side of the other base.
As a thought, would Leupold one-piece base work. Also, there are at least two different hole spacings for the model 70 and it sounds like you need the shorter, older Redfield style base made for the earlier M70. What is the hole spacing--.330; .435?0 -
IMO, something is not right. I am assuming here that the first scope's windage was not cranked all the over to make it work ok on the rifle in the first place. So then the bases and rings should be ok no matter what scope you stick into/onto them. If you have another rifle which has weaver type bases I'd be tempted to remove it's scope and try mounting the Zeiss on a second rifle to see if it demonstrates the same problem. If it does then the scope is the problem not the rings and bases and you should be sending it back for either a refund or replacement. 0 -
Well just back from the range. Thanks for the suggestions. I was able to locktight a single screw on the Leupold rear mount. Shimmed it with thin flexible plastic. I was able to stay in about 4 inches at 200 yds.
But as soon as I return, it's into the gun smith to have it done correctly. Think I'll have the rear base 54 hole closed and re-drilled to fit the 70 mounts. Then they can make sure it's aligned.
I will put the new scope on my son's factory drilled 270 after we get back to check whether the problem follows the scope or not.
Thanks again guys.0
