Custom sporterized 7mm Weatherby
My father who passed in 1999, Gave me his prized 7mm Weatherby, It is actually a springfield action 03-A3 Conversion. It was built in 1960 by a very good friend of his and gun smith by the name of Joe Dutre. Joe had worked for Roy Weatherby prior to opening his own shop in San Jose, Where we lived at the time, actually Campbell. My question is simply, how would one go about finding out the value of such a rifle? I am considering selling it if the price is right, It has the origional Leopold 3x9 Scope and Buehler mounts. The butpad was in bad shape and I had the stock refinished, it was the only thing that had mention of Joe on it, as it Said Dutre Guns, Santa Clara, Ca. I believe, thank you for any help

The value of the custom 1903 could vary from $500 or so to $2,000 depending on the quality of the metal work, quality and amount remaining of the blue, quality and style of the checkering on the stock, quality of the wood the stock is made from, whether the sheetmetal triggerguard was used (surely not), whether a steel 1903 triggerguard was used or whether a quality custom triggerguard was used, whether the original trigger remains or was replaced with a quality aftermarket trigger. Pictures are a must to give an accurate evaluation of the rifle. Even if the maker was a well known gunsmith the value of the rifle will not be enhanced without documentation connecting him with the rifle. A sticky at the top of the forum tells how to post pictures. With some closeup, clear photos of the receiver, triggerguard, buttpad, forend, receiver and overall view of the rifle some of the experts that follow this forum will be able to give a reasonably accurate appraisal. 0 -
Thank you, The Rifle is in absolute perfect condition, bluing, light tapered Barrel. I will have to see if I can get the origional buttpad back. I appriciate your response. I just talked to my mother and she said it was built in late 1963 early 64 at Joes shop in downtown San Jose. 0 -
Dad or Grandpa's rifle would be among the last things I'd sell. But that's just me. 0
