Spotting Scope Question

In general you can buy a binocular or rifle scope for $150 that you could not buy for any price in 1970, the production of BAK-4 glass and pearticularly the lens coatings have progressed whole orders of magnitude.

That said, the spotting scope you want/need depends upon how you plan to use it. If you want to see where your .22 holes are at 50 yards or your .257 holes at 100 yards, most scopes will do. If you are looking at birds at 300 yards and need to see accurate colors, that is something else. None of the rifle scope manufacturers (except Swarovski) is well known for the quality of their spotting scopes, but most of the better scope makers build at least decent spotters. (that does NOT include the budget scope makers). Cabela's stuff can be good, but the quality is uneven. For the range I use a 1970's vintage Bushnell Sportview scope (Which also travels by air for birding). For local or ground travel birding I use a 70mm Leica Televid APO scope. Kowa also builds a very good scope as does Swarovski. Those are near top of the line.

I had the Burris 20-60-x80 Landmark and it worked pretty good. The clarity seemed to be off from what it used to be so I took it to Burris which is a couple of miles from me. Something had come loose inside and there was some dust like material inside on the glass. Needless to say they came out and handed me a new one but I asked for the 15-45-50 instead. The 20-60 was too powerful for what I needed and the 15-45 works just great and fits in my backpack.I guess it all depends on what you are going to use it for...bull

If you are set with Burris, you might want to consider the Burris XTS-2575 25-75x70mm Xtreme Tactical Cassegrain Spotting Scope for an additional $20.

    Good luck!

Thanks, but my needs in a spotting scope are much lower powered then that.

Consider going with a upgraded scope. The newer models range to magnifications that skip the needs for extra baggage.
