No more than normal. If you wanted a 629 then ship it back. S&W has even accidentally misstamped guns as well and they are worth no giant extra amount.

No frame goes unused with S & W - you'd think something like this would command a bit of a premium, but I've not seen that happen. My guess is S & W has been making these little boo boos frequently and for a long time.

I am sure scenario's like this have been going on since the first set of metal stamps were made. I have seen mis-marked items on the auction side, but never seen them sell, let alone for a premium.

I used to frequent a gun store in Brookfield MA fairly near to where the Smith factory is. . .even bought a few guns from them online here at Gunbroker.com.

The owner told me that not a month goes by where he doesn't see some non-catalog variation of a Smith gun. Mislabelled frames are relatively common, but he also sees stuff that was never listed in catalogs (ie unusual barrel variations, caliber variations, etc).

Then to prove it, he pulled out a Smith model 10 (labelled as such) in .357 magnum, and even showed me that the .357 would chamber.

Some are probably "lunchbox specials" (guns taken out by employees), some are factory "saves" where the Smith factory just uses up frame labelled "A" to make gun "B", and some are just simple errors that slipped by quality control (you might call these the "Monday morning specials". . .after the hungover New England guys get back to work [;)]).

Anyway, these are NOT the upside down flying Jenny. . .worth a gazillion dollars and highly prized:

Instead, they're basically normal guns that at BEST might be worth a few extra bucks to some diehard collector, if in pristine shape. The vast majority are just "shooters" that are worth no more (but fortunately, no less) than any similar gun labelled correctly.

Happens with Colt too and I'd presume other manufacturers, but probably not nearly so frequent as with Smith. About 30 years ago I bought a new, 8" nickel "Target Python" in 38 Special new from the Kittery Trading Post in ME. Got it home and after a look or two decided to drop a 357 Magnum round in - chambered fine. I called Colt and recall them being quite animated about returning it to their factory. I assume they were concerned about liability, not collectibility. I've not fired a 357 from the thing yet although I suspect it would be fine. Actually a bit of a pain, I reload to target 38 specs in 357 Magnum cases to avoid carbon build up and figured it helped accuracy a bit using the longer case.

I bought this Smith model 36 with 6" barrel, ser# 337XXX at an auction. The Smith catalog states there were about 24 of these made in ser# range 337XXX. It also says "they may be difficult if not impossible to authenticate".
