Win 1894 Takedown (cont.) Value? Bert?
Bert,
Thank you for the previous information. What condition would you rate this rifle and what overall value would you give it. I'm always open to learn more about judging condition and value of Winchesters. Anything else you have to offer about this particular rifle would be greatly appreciated and respected.

While I am not Bert, I am not blind either. That rifle appears to be in at least 80% condition. It looks all original, and you should get a letter for it. It has a couple special features like the Express sight, and double set triggers, and of course the rarity of the chambering. I would think the value of that rifle would be at least $3000.00...if it is all correct, double that.
EDIT 1
I did provide a disclaimer in the above statement, that says "appears to be". The information you provided in your second post is added information, on the overall condition. The dark bore will detract. Also, the pictures do not accurately show the brown patina, although they do hint at it, as being a little frosty looking. The items you do not mention are the express sight, and front sight configuration. If those are original equipment, that will mean a little more, especially with the express sight. The wood appears to be decent, and original, as it sits a little proud in the furniture, and mates nicely to the frame. I still hold the value at close to $3K, if it is ALL original.0 -
tsr1965,
Here is the serial # search information I got for it from the CFM a while back. All the finish appears original, although it has turned to a brown/plum patina on most of it. The tang sight may have been added at some point. The bore is a little dark with some pitting, but the rifling is still pronounced. I hope you are right, as I payed considerably less than that. Thank you.

tsr1965,
Thank you for your opinion. I feel like this 1894 is in original condition as I just don't see anything that looks suspicious. Can a rifle that has turned to a brown patina still be considered the original finish, just a different color? As far as coverage of the finish, yes, it is 80-90%, but it's far from the original blue. I was actually calling it 50-60% when I purchased it, all things considered. Anyway, maybe Bert will chime in at some point to contribute any thoughts he may have. This forum is sure a good place to learn.0 -
My assessment is that the overall graded conditon is approximately 50% at best.
The rifle has several things that make it desirable;
(1) It is a bona fide antique
(2) The caliber
(3) The set trigger
(3) The sights
On the flip side, both the steel and the wood show their age. As you pointed out, it is more of a brown/plum than the original blue. Typically, the 25-35 WCF bores are not found in the best of condition, and I suspect that the same can be said for your rifle.
Without the benefit of examining your rifle in hand, I am hesitant to assign a value to it.0 -
Bert,
Fair enough and thanks again. I feel fortunate to have stumbled upon this one for my collection. Lots of good info in all these posts.0
